Canterbury Tech Summit
14 September 2017 | Christchurch (Canterbury)
The Canterbury Tech Summit explores trends, opportunities, and major shifts on the horizon. On 14.09.2017, members of the tech ecosystem gathered in Christchurch to be inspired by excellent speakers, build lasting connections and grow New Zealand’s technology sector. The summit, one of the largest technology events in New Zealand - and the largest on the South Island, attracts a diverse audience including businesses, industry, researchers and regional as well as national policy makers. The 2017 event also involved Callaghan Innovation, the NZ EPIC partner, which had a large booth in the plenary auditorium.
The event focused largely on artificial intelligence technology. This being an EPIC focus topic, one of the event objectives was to advertise NZ-EU collaboration by involving European AI experts.
EPIC participated in three parts of the Canterbury Tech Summit 2017:
- Booth in the main plenary hall with EPIC flyers and information
- Panel discussion on Artificial Intelligence
- Workshop on SME AI opportunities
In total, more than 900 ICT experts participated in the Canterbury Tech Summit – about 700 of whom attended the plenary panel session that included EPIC coordinator Erich Prem as one of the discussants. The audience was a mix of ICT experts, research and technology managers and policy makers from all over New Zealand and some overseas visitors. The event resulted in numerous personal discussions with ICT experts from New Zealand, but also with industry representatives and researchers. In particular, there was an interest in applying AI in the field of robotics to innovate New Zealand’s more traditional sectors including, for example, agriculture.
